If the main takeaway from the American Heath Care Act is that it will strip millions of Americans of their insurance coverage, including millions of poor, elderly, and disabled Americans currently on Medicaid, one has to ask: why are the Republicans doing this?
According to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, the main answer lies in how much the bill will cut in taxes and who benefits from those cuts. Essentially the American Heath Care Act is a $600 billion tax cut to the wealthiest 0.1% of the population over ten years. The single biggest tax cut in the bill is the repeal of the 3.8% tax Obamacare levied on capital gains, dividend, and interest income for families with $250,000 or more in income. Repealing that tax is a change that only benefits the rich.
