Welcome to the Indivisible MD Blogs. A place for Marylanders to connect with Indivisible groups and discuss current events.
Sardines is leading the effort in the House against Trump's conflicts of interest. See Washington Post article:
Oops. Auto correct!! Yikes!
The Howard County Town Hall was terrific. Kudos to the organizaers.
It was especially great to see Congressman Sarbanes be so passionate about the ACA.
He is on the House Subcommittee on Health where the new bill will be introduced. Republicans want to push the bill through and thus will be scheduling a mark-up very quickly which will not give anyone a chance to study the bill, get the cost estimates from the OBM or hold hearings.
Anyone else from the amazingly gerimandered 3rd District of Maryland?
So far, I think John Sarbanes is doing a great job. A few weeks ago I listened to his telephone town hall, and liked everything I heard.
I agree - he is very conscientious and principled.
We in MD are fortunate to have mostly decent Senators and Congressmen. Don't forget it is still important for them to constantly receive feedback from us. How we want them to vote, what legislation we want to see, what you like about them, and what disappointed you. If we don't give them the feedback, the conservative leaning voters may sway them when they are on the fence about something. If we never say anything then the conservatives have their ear.
I agree that we need to contact our representatives regularly to both let them know our opinions and also to encourage them to continue the fight. It's easy to do and takes only minutes a day. This is citizenship!
Congressmen think their constituents are much more conservative than they actually are. See this 2013 study by Vanderbilt University http://www.vanderbilt.edu/csdi/miller-stokes/08_MillerStokes_BroockmanSkovron.pdf
Hi! I'm in District 3. Let me know if anyone has started an Indivisible group for District 3. I have at least one other person interested! I live in Columbia but doesn't really matter with D3 does it?
Woods. Double checked and I'm in district 4. I'm looking for anyone who wants to join me in the fight there. I'll repost under district 4
I am in district 3 and I have at least 3 neighbors who are interested.
Myself and a few others in the 3rd congressional district are forming a group. I think we're mostly around Columbia - it is a very gerrymandered district. We will meet for the first time this weekend to work out some logistics and likely register the group with Indivisible.org. I will update this blog on Sunday with more details. In the meantime I would encourage you to meet with your neighbors to discuss what you can do collectively and keep checking this site's homepage for actions and updates.
I am in Columbia and definitely interested in joining you!
Email IndivisibleDemocracy@protonmail.com and we'll send the info.
We're in District 3!
A friend of mine gave me an update about the Howard County CB9 to make Howard a sanctuary county:
Attended the PATH action yesterday afternoon in support of making Howard a sanctuary county. The turnout at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center was about 1,100, nearly 3 times the number expected, so it was an overflow crowd with standing room only, and not much of that! As with all PATH actions, we had people from multiple congregations, including Catholic (St. John Roman Catholic was the host congregation), Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, Unitarian/Universalist, etc., along with members of the teachers' union and many undocumented immigrants, some of whom spoke of their plight. No red-clad Trump bigots dared show their hateful faces to cause trouble, as they had at earlier county council hearings. PATH, People Acting Together in Howard, normally focuses on local issues, but of course in this case, by standing in defence of our undocumented friends and neighbors, we were also acting in defiance of that overgrown 2-year-old bully in the White House who is trying to scare us into ratting out those friends and neighbors. The music and testimonies were inspiring! If you live in Howard County, be sure to let you County Council member know that you support the sanctuary bill, CB 9. If you have access to the email list for Indivisible MD members, if would be very helpful to ask them to contact their council council members also. Council Members Jen Terrasa and Calvin Ball (my rep) are co-sponsors of the bill and were at the PATH action; Greg Fox is of course opposed; and Jon Weinstein and Mary Kay Sigaty are as yet undecided. We need the votes of 4 of the five council members to override the county executive's promised veto. Weinstein, the only council member who can run for re-election because the others are all term-limited, is reportedly trying to work out a compromise on the issue. All five council members need to hear from their constituents. They've been hearing from far too many of the negative xenophobes!
Can you tell me what PATH is?
I am not associated with their group. Their website is http://path-iaf.org. it says:
People Acting Together in Howard (PATH) is a broad-based community power organization, rooted in Howard County’s neighborhoods and congregations. We are non-partisan, multi-faith, multiracial, and dedicated to making our county and state a better place to live and thrive. You’ll find us working for change: door-to-door and in living rooms, in churches and classrooms, in front of the County Council and at the State House in Annapolis.
That's great to hear Ruth. Thanks for the details.
I am hosting a postcard writing gathering Thursday morning at 11am at my home. If you would like to come, please reply here and I will be in touch with information.
This would be a good opportunity for collecting personal stories related to issues that concern our group.
Please come out in support for the vote on CB9 (Making Howard County a Sanctuary) today Feb 6. The vote is at 7pm at the George Howard Building, 3430 Court House Dr # 100, Ellicott City, MD 21043, but Howard County High School students are organizing a rally from 4:30-5:30/6 before the vote to show support and get people to show up. If people are interested in attending the rally, please text @cb9dem to the number 81010 for more information and to rsvp. Wear green and plan to bring a sign (we’ll try to have some available to hand out) so that the council can see where you stand. At the last hearing, the opposition brought lots of mass produced signs and was very visible.
Website looks great!
Hi All -
I am in district 3. I am co-chair of the SE Baltimore Huddle (Women's March 10 actions/100 days effort) so if anyone is interested in joining us (men are welcome!) the next meeting is at Panera in Canton, March 4 at 4pm. It's about two hours. We have postcards.
I am also connected to the district 3 Sister District group on Facebook. I don't know if I can add people, but I can connect you to the admin of that group.
Is Indivisible MD an active group? The website hasn't been updated in month's and these blogs are dead. I never hear of any Indivisible MD sponsored events. What does Indivisible MD do?
